Examination Board Analysis
Top Grades Compared: HKDSE vs IB vs GCE iAL vs AP
What percentage of students achieve the highest grades in each major qualification system? Using the equivalence established in our Oxbridge admission requirements analysis — DSE 5+ as comparable to IB 6+, GCE A*, and AP 5 — we compare top-grade attainment subject by subject across the four examination boards.
Grade Equivalence
Key Findings
GCE iAL students achieve the highest top-grade rates in most subjects — particularly in Mathematics (49.1%) and History (50.1%), where the A/A* rate dwarfs all other boards.
IB HL students excel in Economics (44.8%) and Geography (42.1%) — the IB's Higher Level subjects consistently produce strong top-grade percentages in humanities and social sciences.
DSE top-grade rates are the most conservative — only in Physics (30.4%) and Further Maths/M2 (39.1%) does DSE approach the levels seen in other boards, reflecting the exam's reputation for rigour.
AP scores vary widely by subject — Calculus BC (46%) is generous, while Biology and Chemistry (both ~15%) are among the stingiest of any board in any subject.
Subject-by-Subject Comparison
Bars show the percentage of candidates achieving the top grade. The highest rate in each row is highlighted in maroon.

Methodology & Subject-Mapping
- IB level selection: Higher Level (HL) was used for sciences and humanities as the level most comparable to DSE's difficulty. For Mathematics, Analysis & Approaches SL was used as the core-Maths equivalent and Analysis HL as the Further Maths / M2 equivalent.
- AP subject mapping: AP Economics is split into Microeconomics and Macroeconomics — the two were averaged. AP has no direct Business Management equivalent. Calculus BC was used as the Further Maths equivalent, and Calculus AB as core Maths.
- GCE iAL Further Maths: Maps to DSE M2 (Mathematics Extended Module 2 — Algebra & Calculus), consistent with the mapping used in our Oxbridge admission requirements analysis.
- English: DSE Core English is compared to IB English A: Language and Literature HL, GCE English Language, and AP English Language & Composition — the most commonly required English qualifications for university admission.
